VPPPA Mediation Program

The VPPPA offers free mediation services for VPPPA member sites that are pursuing VPP participation or continuation of the VPP, but are impeded in their efforts due to labor/management disputes in reference to safety and health. Mediation services can only take place when all parties agree to invite a mediator to the site. This could occur when a facility is contemplating VPP involvement, or when one or more parties in a VPP partnership are considering withdrawing from the program. Mediators will assist parties in reaching an appropriate decision for their worksite. As a neutral party, mediators have no authority to bind any party to a commitment.

Mediators from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) are regularly called upon to conduct mediation training for both managers and hourly employees at VPPPA member sites from numerous companies and unions. These mediators will assist parties in reaching an appropriate decision for their worksite. As a neutral party, mediators have no authority to bind any party to a commitment. Generally, mediators will work in teams of two: one with a management background and one with a union background.

Worksites that may be interested in mediation services or in receiving mediation training are encouraged to contact the VPPPA National Office at (703) 761-1146 Ext. 303. Once a request for mediation is received, the request will be evaluated by a team, and if it is determined that VPPPA mediation services would be appropriate under the circumstances, the Association will supply the worksite with trained mediators.
