Cop or Coach? How Supervisors Can Make A Difference
Do your leaders manage only for compliance' Or do they also coach for performance' Supervisors play a key role in organizations. They directly impact workplace safety in a way that neither managers nor workers can. Supervisors are often promoted into their positions with little or no training in interpersonal communication or coaching. Teaching supervisors to become safety coaches can have a significant impact on accidents, as well as help supervisors to become better overall influencers of workplace behavior.

Electrical Maintenance as a Safety Issue
Electrical power system faults can create tremendous energy, often in the millions of watts. When these systems are designed, they are engineered to operate quickly to clear short circuits and provide coordinated tripping of protective devices. Time, tampering and a misunderstanding of how these systems perform create huge safety hazards for workers. This workshop will discuss what is needed for a safe electrical system, how systems become unsafe and how to create a safer electrical working environment.

SafetyStart Prior to Every Task
SafetyStart is a self-check method before, during and after performing tasks. We all need to take time prior to every task we undertake and think about what hazards are involved and what defenses are in place. Complicated jobs have a pre-job briefing; however, many times workers are injured doing simple jobs that don't require a high level of scrutiny prior to starting. This process can even apply to simple jobs like driving a vehicle.

Roadway Safety Program
Highway work zones are some of the most dangerous work sites in construction. Each year over 100 construction workers are killed on the highways. Many are killed by traffic but many are also being run over or backed over by construction vehicles, electrocuted by overhead power lines, crushed in trenches and injured by falls. They also face numerous health hazards from noise and silica to heat stress and ergonomic hazards. This training program was developed to orient workers to these hazards and provide best practices to reduce the risks. The program was developed by a joint labor/management partnership through a series of grants from OSHA and FHWA. It is available in many formats- as a computer program, print materials for workers, and a poster-sized version for toolbox talks in the field. The program is trilingual- English, Spanish and Portuguese. It also includes a compliance mode which displays relevant standards. It covers all the major hazards in road construction in 21 modules. Each module includes interactive computerized demonstrations to graphically show the risks. Advanced modules also cover topics like proper set up of the work zone. This presentation will review the training program and its many features.
