VPPPA Mentoring Program's HistoryIn 1994, the VPPPA Mentoring Program was designed with the clearly defined goal to support the mission of the Association: to be a leader in health, safety and environmental excellence through cooperation among communities, workers, industries and governments. The program provides assistance to worksites striving to improve their safety and health management systems with the ultimate goal of attaining OSHA, OSHA state plan or DOE VPP status. Based on the program, the Association takes a coordinating role, matching sites with mentors that are willing to share insight and personal experience with VPP participation according to the motto: "Don't Reinvent the Wheel!"In 2000, the VPPPA Mentoring Program was awarded the Associations Advance America Honor Roll, sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), and was mentioned as "one of the most established mentoring initiatives in the U.S." in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and the Environment, a book edited by Ruth Hillary (2000). While the VPPPA Board of Directors appreciated this acknowledgement as well as OSHA's positive recognition for the program's role in the higher quality of VPP applications that they have been receiving, it also saw room for improvement. As a result, the VPPPA Mentoring and Mediation Committee was called into life at the November Board of Directors' Meeting in 2002. This committee was later split into two, and, in March 2003, the newly created Mentoring Committee started defining roles and responsibilities of all involved in the program to better structure and streamline the process. Later in 2003, the committee recognized a need to better track mentoring activities. A system was created to enter mentoring activities in the Association's database and allow for mentoring reports split out by region. This provided mentoring coordinators with more accurate information and will also allow the committee members to evaluate the program, which in turn will help identify areas for process improvements. The VPPPA Mentoring Program remains a work in progress, ready to adapt to the changing needs of the industry to better support the mission of the Association. |
