VPPPA Mentoring ProcessFor the mentoring process to start, an interested site needs to make contact with a VPPPA representative who then refers the potential mentee to the mentoring coordinator at the VPPPA National Office. The mentoring coordinator explains the mentoring process and provides the site with an application form. This form is very important because it contains all the essential information that factors into the matching process: location; number of employees; SIC or NAICS; a description of what activities the site engages in; and whether or not unions are present at the site. With a good idea of what the site is looking for and with help from the appropriate OSHA VPP regional manager, state-plan representative or Department of Energy (DOE) representative, the regional coordinator, who receives the request from the national office, identifies potential mentors and places a call. Once a match is made, the relationship forged between the current VPP site and the mentee is unique. The word "mentoring," which is derived from the Greek word for "enduring," can be defined as a lasting relationship between two or more parties. Mentoring activities occur at a variety of levels, ranging from phone calls to site visits. Some mentors have even conducted mock audits to prepare applicants for the actual VPP onsite evaluation.
